Our good friend had warned us, but
nothing she could have said would have prepared us for what we
saw as my sister turned the corner onto "Spook Light road". When I was fifteen dad retired and we moved from Houston Texas to the northeaster corner of Oklahoma. We had not lived there long until we begin enjoying the rich folklore of the area. Tales of ghosts and UFO's were plentiful. One story, in particular, surfaced more than all the rest: a strange story about a ghost Light that could be seen on a certain road at night, the "Spook Light", they called it. While we did not take too much stock in ghost stories, any excuse to take a ride in the country was always welcomed. So it was, in the spring of 1967, that under the direction of our new friend, we headed for Spook Light road. The sun-drenched countryside was ablaze with new blossoms of flora and fauna. Spring flowers and greenery made the trip a real delight. To say the least, the world looked anything but spooky! We left in plenty of time to get there and scout out the area before dark. I'm ashamed to admit it, but as my sister drove the car, my niece and I (we are the same age) sat laughing and poking fun at our friend who could spin tales of the ghost Light to no end. "It bounces up and down and travels up the road," she said, speaking of the Light. "Sure it does," we laughed. "No, really. It's no joke. The light is out there and has been known to come close to people's car if they sit still and quite long enough." We gave her the horse laugh and began making jokes and pretending the ghost light was chasing us. After following our friend's directions, turning this way and that, we were finally driving down Spook Light road. It was hilly, but straight for several miles and very rocky, a typical country road of the area. Satisfied that we knew the roads well enough, we headed for the highway to find a cafe. Hot cheeseburgers were delicious that day as we continued listening to spook stories, coming now from the owner of the small restaurant that has long ceased to exist. We laughed as the proprietor spun a tale about his wife waiting to meet him one night on Spook Light road. It seems she grew tired of waiting and soon fell asleep in her pickup, only to be wakened by the ghost light itself, hovering over the windshield of her truck! "The cab was filled with strange iridescent light," she had claimed, and had nervously fumbled 'til she found the headlight switch causing the light to vanish. Of course we took all this with a grain of salt and ordered extra fries. Later that evening, about dusk, as the Oklahoma sun had set behind the oak trees, we once more turned onto Spook Light road. This time, the joke was on us. Down the road, we saw what appeared to be a lantern light, being carried along. The light was whitish-yellow and glowed dimmer and then brighter as if powered by a magneto. Later, as we sat on the side of the road, it split into three lights, all at a 45-degree angle, then vanished, and reappeared in one piece. Since that night I have seen the Spook Light many, many times, in clear, rainy, overcast, and in stormy weather, and even with snow on the ground. As long as we would sit still and not flash any lights or honk horns, etc., the light would move around, up and down the road. Many times it would come toward us, only to vanish when a car showed up with headlights. One night, circa 1967, we were determined to sit on Spook Light road until all the other cars were gone. We did. Around 3:30 that morning, the Spook Light came within; I'd estimate 12-15 feet of our car hood. It was glowing, pulsating a bit, and appeared to be the size of a basketball. In spite of the fact that we had seen the light many times, we all yelled: "turn on the lights" at the same time! My sister flipped the switch on those early hidden headlights (powered by vacuum) and in seven and one half seconds our lights came on and the spook light went out for the night. I will never forget that night the longest day I live. What it is, no one knows. All I can say is, it is out there and it is real. I'm not saying it is a ghost, I do not know. All I am saying is, that it is an unidentified light from an unidentified source that moves around on Spook Light road. The light has been discussed on a television show, PM Magazine, I think. This is a true story of personal experience, by Calypso. |
